Synopsis
DÖMDÖ- DÖMDÖ-DÖMDÖDÖM – THE GREAT POETS’ COMPETITION
With lots of music
Based on the tale by Ervin Lázár Adapted for the stage and directed by: Andrea Pass
Being a child is no easy task. There’s so much to learn about the world, about each other, and about ourselves. So many fascinating things surround us! And everything has a name! There’s a word, an expression for everything. Even for our feelings. Anger, fear, sadness, joy, love—anyone who has heard a poem knows this!
At the Great Poets’ Competition, the inhabitants of the Square Round Forest try to put their feelings and thoughts into words. Even Dömdödöm, though the only thing he can ever say is: Dömdödöm.
The Square Round Forest is Ervin Lázár’s best-known and most frequently published storybook. It is a series of independent tales which, thanks to their recurring setting and characters, can also be read as a fairytale novel. The Square Round Forest is a mythical space—the land of the impossible, the strange, the everything-is-possible. It is both square and round, enclosed yet homely, a place of retreat for its characters.
All of them are outcasts of the “real” world, the disappointed, the rejected—collected into the forest by Mikkamakka, a kind of “fisher of men.” Each episode offers them the chance to rediscover themselves, to experience belonging and community through shared effort—or by consensus they decide who the winner is, just as it happens in the story of Dömdödöm, the poetic contest we chose to stage.
